WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (MARCH 18, 2025) — The Williamsport Area High School music department is preparing for its annual musical production.
“Seussical” is set to hit the stage beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, April 4, with a matinee performance scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, April 5.
The musical unfolds as The Cat in the Hat tells the tale of Horton, a kindhearted elephant who discovers a tiny speck of dust that houses the entire world of the Whos, including Jojo — a young Who sent to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s journey is far from easy: while defending the Whos from skeptics and threats, he also takes on the responsibility of protecting an abandoned egg left in his care by the carefree Mayzie La Bird. Despite facing ridicule, danger, kidnapping and even a trial, Horton finds unwavering support in the devoted Gertrude McFuzz. In the end, the story celebrates the triumph of friendship, loyalty, family and community.
Among the cast and crew of about 50 students, the production stars Xavier Johnston as Cat in the Hat; Johanna Pelly as Jojo/Boy; Elijah Nilson as Horton the Elephant; Ava Girton as Gertrude McFuzz; Paiton Miller as Mayzie La Bird; Colton Taylor as Mr. Mayor; Caroline Pelly as Mrs. Mayor; Jaslin Shand as Sour Kangaroo; Albert Campbell as General Gengus Khan Schmitz; Tatium Zarzyczny, Tyler Perhsall and Colyn Jandrisavitz as The Wickersham Brothers; and Yasmin Smith, Elizabeth Kirk and Sabra Fisher as The Bad Girls.
Directors Sam Robinson and Megan Louder, the high school’s choral instructors, said the cast and crew are excited to share their work with the community, and have worked tirelessly to bring the magic of Dr. Seuss’s world and characters to life.
“Bringing ‘Seussical’ to life has been a thrilling experience,” said Robinson, who, alongside Louder, also is working with choreographer Theresa Kendall. “One of the biggest challenges has been capturing the larger-than-life world of Dr. Seuss on stage — creating colorful, whimsical imagery and high-energy choreography, while ensuring the heart of the story remains at the forefront.”
Robinson said the musical emphasizes themes of acceptance, imagination and believing in oneself — lessons that go beyond the stage.
“Watching the students grow in confidence and creativity throughout rehearsals has been incredibly rewarding,” he said.
“Every aspect of this show — from the music to the choreography to the vibrant costumes — has been shaped by the dedication of our talented students and production team,” he added. “Countless hours have gone into rehearsals, set construction and technical preparations, and we can’t wait to share the final product with our audience.”
Robinson said “Seussical” is a show for all ages, with infectious energy, memorable music and a lovely message.
“Whether you grew up reading Dr. Seuss or are discovering these stories for the first time, this production promises a fun, uplifting experience,” he said. “It’s also a great way to support local students and celebrate their hard work.”
Advanced tickets will be on sale at the WAHS main office during school hours (cash or check only) beginning March 31. Tickets also will be available at the door. Prices are $12 for adults and $7 for students.
