WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (MARCH 26, 2024) —The Williamsport High School Class of 1962 recently established the Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund at the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation (WASDEF), aimed at supporting the post-secondary pursuits of graduating students.

The members of the Class of 1962 opted to forego future reunions and instead channel their collective efforts toward creating a lasting impact through their alma mater. Using the remaining cash balance of their class funds, the class seeded the scholarship fund and rallied support from classmates to ensure its sustainability.

Their dedication and generosity culminated in surpassing their initial fundraising goal, with contributions exceeding $16,000.

The fund aims to empower deserving students by providing financial assistance to pursue their academic aspirations. Reflecting the values and experiences of the class, the scholarship will be awarded to two graduating students annually, beginning in 2025.

One scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated resilience in the face of personal or academic challenges, exhibiting determination to achieve success in their post-secondary education. The second scholarship will recognize a student who, while not pursuing post-secondary education, has shown extraordinary perseverance and resilience in overcoming difficult circumstances to achieve their goals.

For more information about The Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund or to contribute to its ongoing success, please contact WASDEF Executive Director Greg Hayes at 570-327-5500 ext. 40602 or by email at ghayes@wasd.org.

WASDEF manages more than 130 scholarship, prize and award funds. On average, the foundation provides about 100 students with a scholarship, prize or award each year. Each fund has specific award criteria established by the gifting donor. The selection and application process are conducted through the high school's guidance office.

WASDEF is a recognized nonprofit affiliate of the Williamsport Area School District. The education foundation facilitates charitable giving and permanent legacies based on individual areas of interest in educational innovation, the arts, athletics and scholarships.
