Image for 'Hour of Code,' Title 1 Nights Showcase Innovative Educational Practices
Lycoming Valley and Curtin Intermediate schools hosted a combined "Hour of Code" and Title 1 at each of their locations on Jan. 28 and Feb. 5, respectively. The events celebrated not only literacy, but also provided an opportunity for families to experience all the innovative ways students are learning in the classroom.

Curtin and Lycoming Valley Intermediate schools will host their annual YAM-JAM events in March. Together, the events will celebrate National Youth Art and Music in Our Schools month, but honor it separately through different themes.

The WASD music department will present its 45th annual All-District Orchestra concert on Monday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at WAHS. The program will feature the talents of more than 450 students in grades four through 12.

The WASD Education Foundation will host its 14th annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 24, at the Williamsport Country Club. Registration begins 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The tournament, presented by returning platinum sponsor Aramark, will benefit the Athletic Program Endowment Fund at WASDEF.

Coleen Genovese began as WASD's new elementary special education supervisor this week. Genovese comes to the district from the Benton Area School District, where she most recently served as its K-12 director of curriculum and instruction and director of grant writing and federal programs.

Mr. Brandon Coleman was recently named Supervisor of Pupil Transportation and School Safety at WASD. Coleman, who begins April 1, comes to WASD from Keystone Central School District, where he’s held the position of the district’s supervisor of police and transportation since 2009.

In partnership with UPMC Susquehanna, WASD continues to train all district employees this year in the national Stop the Bleed initiative. Today, 16 Stop the Bleed kits, each containing eight individual kits, were delivered to the district for installation at each of its school buildings for public accessibility.

Increased challenges in core curriculum courses and introduction to enhanced music education, such as playing a musical instrument, will help your child learn about his or her aptitudes and abilities and help shape your child's future interests.
